Introduction of Strain Measurement

Strain measurement is an effective method to measure deformation of pipe or object after external force is applied. Permanent or excessive deformation of object could lead to damage and/or failure. Strain gauge measurement is used to confirm result of finite element calculation.

How the technology works

Strain gauge is made from a small metal wire. Curled into various shapes to generate electrical signals and placed on the insulating sheet or semi-conductors which is highly sensitive to change.

The principle of strain gauges is that when has a force will cause changes in shape (stretch, twist, bend) causing the resistance of the object to change according to the force applied to that object. Strain measurement used to connect the Wheatstone bridge to find the difference in the voltage that occurs when the resistance changes from the force.

Application of Strain Measurement

Strain gauges are also used as sensors for measuring force, pressure, acceleration, displacement and torque. Therefore, strain gauges are used widely in wide range of applications such as research and industry; e.g. structural and piping design and modeling, aviation and automotive industry, etc.

Problem detection

  • Confirmation result of finite element.
  • Measurement or deformation due to exerting force, pressure, acceleration, displacement and torque.
